The importance of taking time off

Last weekend I had a long overdue catch up with my oldest friends in Majorca. It was the kind of weekend where you laugh until your face hurts, have conversations that spark new ideas, and forget what day it is (in the best possible way). We’re all creatives, so the chats naturally wandered into work now and then – but without the pressure of deadlines or inboxes pinging, it was much needed.
It reminded me just how important it is to step away from your business now and then. Properly. Not just closing the laptop early or scrolling Instagram while telling yourself it’s “rest”. I mean fully switching off – no emails, no mental to-do lists ticking away in the background.
Here’s why I believe taking time out isn’t just beneficial – it’s essential:
1. Fresh air = fresh perspective
When you’re constantly in the thick of it, it’s hard to see the bigger picture. Stepping away – even for a few days – gives your brain space to breathe. Ideas bubble up more easily when you’re not actively chasing them.
2. Conversations fuel creativity
Creative friends are good for the soul and even better for your work. I came home with new insights, fresh angles, and even a few potential collaborations. Sometimes the best inspiration doesn’t come from a screen – it comes over a glass of wine and a good chat.
3. Rest is productive
Burnout doesn’t produce your best work – rest does. Taking time off isn’t lazy or indulgent. It’s maintenance. Like charging your phone or servicing your car. You come back sharper, calmer, and more focused.
4. You are not your business
When you run your own thing, it’s easy to let it consume you. But taking a step back reminds you that you’re a person first – with friends, interests, and a life beyond client deadlines and project pipelines.
